Garage break-in

This is to alert the community: My gargage was broken into on last night. Some no good for nothing wanting to get anything for free instead of working person or persons came onto my property and took items that we worked for and purchased. I am really pissed.

Sorry error in spelling it should be "garage"

There is an alarm company that just moved into Mt. Greenwood behind La Fiesta. They installed an alarm system in m neighbor's house and put in something called garage guard. Does anyone know anything about the alarm company? I waas thinking about giving them a call, but I forgot wha their name was! Any help?

I am so sorry that you had to endure the break in of your garage. It saddens me so much that now people do not take into consideration the hard work that people put into their homes. It literally makes me sick to know someone can just come in and take what they want. 9 times out of 10 it is someone who is near and has seen what is put in other's garages. I would ask around, sooner or later someone will snitch for a reward. Just sicken's me. I live near Midway and noticed a few teens lurking around and I do not hesitate to call the police for any suspicious activity. More people need to get involved.

My garage has been targeted several times only to have my alarm which is tied to my garage go off. The last time I was att home when my alarm alerted me of activity in my garage. I caught one of the burglars after a brief chase on 82nd and spaulding and kicked his ass real good then called the police and had him arrested. The cost associated with the alarm on my garage is 5 dollars per month.

Michelle, I'm so sorry your belongings were stolen. Thanks for warning everyone. I hope the police can track down the thief. bill, how does your garage alarm work? Is it triggered by a motion detector that senses movement inside the garage or is it attached to the garage door so it knows when someone opens it? I'm just curious. I don't live in 60620, but we have problems with garage break-ins in my neighborhood as well. Becca -- EveryBlock.com Community Manager

Good information. Thanks bill. Just in case anyone is interested, I created a search page of garage-related incidents (mostly vandalism and burglaries) from early Aug. to early Oct. You might find the map to be of particular interest because it shows where the crimes are clustered. http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/by-place/61/locations/zipcodes/60620/by-date/2010-08-15,2010-10-15/#widermap

That's a good idea but it does us no good because there is only one police car assigned to our neighborhood. We pay the most in taxes and get the least in protective services. I have been to our elected aldermans office on several times so she is very much aware of the problems that are plaguing this ward and she has done nothing about it. Also the neighborhood caps program is a joke. We need to organize and protect our own property by any means.

Thanks to everyone for lending me your ears so I could vent. I agree that's its a shame that people who work have to be afraid to leave home out of fear that someone will break into your home or garage. Bits its the time that we live in most of these people steal to sell to Pawn shops for little or nothing that's one reason we don't need them in the community. I saw one Pawn shop with a sign in the window that read "big screen tbs wanted" hum where do you think the tv will come from, yes you guessed it someone home.

Trust me there are a lot of families in this ward that feel your pain and frustration but we as a community can't give in to these low lifes. My experience tells me that these thieves often live close by and they will come back and repeat the come again so stay alert. If you happen to catch them in the act. Do like I did beat the hell out of them he was thankful a police that lives on the block came out and saved him. Also when you vote for your elected official that is supposed to be your voice remember all the crimes that she knows of and does nothing about it. Its time for a change in leadership

Is the alderman supposed to babysit the garages ?

    These people thanked:

  • bill October 16
It has nothing to do with baby sitting garages more so than fighting for more police presence in our neighborhood especially after the many complaints she got. There is a epidemic of home burglaries garage break ins and over all crime.

Keep in mind that there are very in-expensive technologies that can be purchased to help deter and/or apprehend these prowling offenders. This could be the first step in forming a non-for-profit organization that would be eligible to receive fundings/monies to make this ipso facto a reality.

Darryl M I don't think that anyone is expecting the Alderman to "babysit the garages". Its just as a elected official we expect them to serve the community as an elected official. They have an obligation service the communities. As a resident of the 18th Ward I have not been given the service that I as a tax payer need. My community is habitually under-serviced. Its like pulling teeth to make a request from the 18th Ward. I have not made any personal request I am an active member of my block club and caps so all of my request are for my community. We need more police presence in the commuinities, in areas were their is less crime the city officials need to demand that extra police should be reassigned to areas with more crime, (let me put this out there I am a Jody Weiss supporter) its the officials at city hall that are responsible for providing funds to hire more police. I don't think that we should have to refer to burglaries as "routine". We can see which alderman are working for their community not those that you only see standing behind the mayor for a photo opt or attending caps meeting when they hear that the community is dis-satisfied with him or her. All I am saying I have told my alderman: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/us/15cncblock.html?_r=2&sq=block

Well, you guys elected the 18th ward alderman. You had a chance to elect someone else with more connections in the run-off but you felt the white man's ice was colder and voted for Ald. Murphy's person, Lona. Maybe since so many here think they can do a better job, they should run for the office - or is it easier to complain from the cheap seats ?

    These people thanked:

  • Michelle L-S October 16
Since you have decided to use the phrase "white man's ice" I am going to opt out of the topic because I think you have a hidden agenda to say something like that.

Michelle you are so right the race card never should have been dealt in our neighborhood discussion. He sounds like a candidate that lost the election to lona. In essence he is crying over spilled milk. I have no problem telling anyone that I didn't vote for her in the previous election so get your facts straight before you make broad assertions.

I so agree with bill. It is ridiculous to have a discussion and it turns so fast. This is a serious issue and I feel that something has to be done about it. Many will criticize until it happens to them. I myself have had a home invasion many years ago and know that it is such a violation when you work so hard and have some scum come in and take what they want. Its sad that as neighbors (my own opinion), that we have forgotten how to call the police when someone is looking suspicious. Not saying that someone may have seen something, but come on. I can't stand my neighbors in the least, but trust you me that if I see something happening to their home, I have no problem calling the police. When I was growing up in Bucktown, neighbors would call before you got home to tell your folks that something was going on, we need to watch for each other more. I really hope someone will come forward and you get your belongings or whatever they took. SCUM thats what I call them, just back yard scum! Okay I ranted, enough said.

Look, be real. It doesn't matter whether Ghengis Khan, or Brett Favre, or MLK, or Geronimo busted into your garage. It is irrelevant. The relevant fact is the violation, the crime. Not only did Darryl make it racial, he made it political. Yes, keep talking to local politicians. Be vigiliant. And don't feel any "racial" guilt about calling about suspicious people, whether the be black, white, or purple. If they are lurking around, acting suspicious, you know it. My grandfather used to say to me, when fishing on the beach, because the waves would tug at my line and make it feel like a fish, "Look, you will *know* it when you have a fish on." Same thing.

  • Michelle McNamara October 18
Frederick Henry is right! We need to continue telling our alderman/alderwomen about these break-ins! In the meantime, I don't want to be the next victim and I don't think I am as brave as Bill to chase someone down! I'm going to give the alarm company a call and see what they offer!

    These people thanked:

Michelle you are absolutely right but the response I got from the alderman when I complained was we didn't complain when murphy was the alderman. she is very much aware of the break ins in the ward. There are shootings taking place at the gas station and the immediate blocks surroundng that gas station all the time. She does absolutely nothing about it and that's right next to her office. You can pass that station at anytime and see three or more gang bangers lurking in front of the gas station. I know she has to see that

    These people thanked:

  • Frederick Henry October 18
I guess the only relevant local issue is this: Can we somehow get the kids (and the grown-ups that are still living like kids) to understand the goodness of knowing boundaries. Life only matters when you respect other people. And this goes for not letting your dog sh*t on my yard, saying "please" and "thank you", not tossing trash on the street, and realizing that however badly I might need money, I'm not going to steal it. Somehow kids need to learn that it is right, and it feels good, to make that personal sacrifice. I probably wasted my breath saying this, since I'm not sure it will change. Waking up every morning to news reports of 7 more shootings and innumerable break-ins.

Sorry to hear about the garage situation Michelle. I know how to install security cameras and maybe you can use them to help you going forward. We need a extra set of eyes these days in order to have a chance to stop some of the people who prey on our community. I remember when this city didn't allow people like us to have homes, and it wasn't that long ago.

You are right mr henry I have coached little league baseball for 7 years and use to be able to train my kids free of charge under max who was the park district administrator. When our new alderman took over and installed ryan as the administrator we were informed that we have to pay 110 for two hours in the gym. Not only do we pay taxes to fund the park district which is supposed to be free anyway we have to pay a fee to use the park district. The park district is a non for profit entity however the charge a fee for everything except to the police and firemen they get to play for free anytime they want. What's wrong with this picture we need someone who is going to be sensitive to the needs and issues of everyone in the ward not just the so called elite

Can you imagine the racial profiling uproar if young men standing in front of the gas station are rounded up just for standing around ? And the alderman has a point, no one beefed when "Mr. Charlie" was the alderman, but now they want to dump on Auntie Lona.

mr darryl you are comical if nothing else. First of all we didn't have these problems when mr charlie was alderman. As for racial profiling when people have be shot and car jacked at that station on numerous occasions is ridiculous. One day it might be you ,your wife or your child that's getting gas and get robbed, shot or car jacked then how would you feel about racial profiling. Wow it just hit me you have teen age kids that are part of the problem here in this ward. You are a parent that don't know where his children are you just let them roam around the neighborhood destroying property. Wake up and start acting your age and stop using the race card all the time. You can't make one comment without using the race card.

Darryl, I politely suggest that everything you say is filled with anger and skepticism and not a whit of helpfulness. Maybe kids loitering on a corner should be rounded up. They have nowhere else to go? How about the park, or their room at home (this is a problem) to read a book? I guess being at home really must be painful. Particularly when home has no boundaries and it affects other people.

Psalms 146:3-5 Do not put your trust in nobles, nor in the son of earthling man,to whom no salvation belongs...hope in God. The Bible helps us to appreciate that only God's Kingdom (LORDs Prayer Matthew 6:9,10) is the only government/kingdom that can bring true peace and security to the earth. No alderman will ever solve the problems that our communities face today. You can not legislate a persons heart condition. There are single mothers and absent fathers struggling to raise their children, they are left without the proper support or guidance to learn to do the right thing and there is just to much negative things for them to get involved in. There is a break down in family life, in the past if mother and father both worked, then there was the grandparents who stepped in to help. Today, everybody is all about ME, nobody shows concern for neighbor. If, a child was doing wrong a neighbor would kindly say something, everybody minds there own business and returns to their own little hole. Where is the LOVE, it's gone. All the marching in the world is not going to change the fact that people nolonger show concern for one another, and the Bible predicted this 2Timothy 3: 1-5. Children without proper training, love and guidance are going to learn to do the wrong thing, because the people that do not have their best interest at heart, are the ones taking the time to show and interest in them. If, you haven't done anything to reach out and help some one, in addition to your own child, maybe your childs friend. Then shut up because, you are part of the problem, and not the solution.
